Chapter Twenty-Six

Cherime stood outside the clinic fuming as she pulled out her phone and called Mara’s number.

No answer and Cherime huffed. Dammit. She dialled again. Still no answer. She walked a few more blocks and tried Mara’s number again.

Third time was the charm as Mara finally picked up. “Hi.”

“What the fuck, Mara? I wasn’t in there with Coop that long.”

Mara seemed distracted. “Well, how would I know that? I wouldn’t put it past you and him to be bumping uglies in his office.”

Cherime pulled the phone away from her ear and glared at it. “We were talking, that’s all. Come back and get me.”

“Okay.” Mara’s exasperation was coming through loud and clear. “I’m in the middle of shopping, so I’ll be a half hour and then I have the ultrasound, which I can go to on my own, if you don’t want to go.”

Yeah, good old Mara. Now that her crisis was over, thanks to Cherime, she was back to being the bossy big sister. “Right. I’m meeting a friend later anyway. I’ll catch up to her and bum a ride.” She hit the end button and shoved her phone into her purse.

Now what? She looked around while her wolf pranced inside of her, begging for a run. Settle, princess. We’re not going to run through Darkness Falls with my purse around your neck. We’d end up on the front-page news and not in a good way.

She slipped out of her stilettos and started to walk. She wasn’t that far from Aubrey’s apartment and decided she could walk there and hang out for a while. Maybe get Aubrey to give her a ride.

Or maybe not.

The outcome kind of depended on how pissed off Aubrey was. As Cherime strolled towards the apartment building, she concocted a plan to get back in Aubrey’s good graces. It wasn’t much of a plan – more like the right thing to do. Apologize.

Karma chose that time to mock her and she stubbed her toe on a rock. “Fuck!” she muttered. After she blew on her toe and imagined the rock apologizing to her, she felt better.

That’s all she had to do; pretend she was the rock.

When she reached the apartment building, she stood on the third floor beside Aubrey’s apartment door and listened while she put her shoes back on. The low murmur of the television confirmed a presence inside. Nice being a schoolteacher, finishing work half-way through the day.

She knocked and a minute later, Aubrey opened it wearing a bathrobe and towel around her head. “Cherime,” she said, ice in her voice, a frown on her face.

Cherime was once again transported back to high school. Goddamned schoolteachers. “Aubrey,” she replied trying to appear contrite. “I came to apologize for Monday.”

Aubrey tilted her head as she crossed her arms. “Okay. Apologize then.” Her stance was straight, her legs parted and stiff. She would have seemed intimidating if she hadn’t had to tilt her head back to glare up at Cherime’s face.

“I did. That was the apology.
